As part of its commitment to promoting the well-being and positive development of young people, the Economic and Social Empowerment of Rural Communities (ESERC) conducted a sensitization programme for in-school youths in Enugu State on October 6, 2019. The initiative focused on educating students about the dangers of drug abuse, cultism, and HIV/AIDS while encouraging them to make informed and responsible life choices.
The sensitization programme brought together students, teachers, and school administrators in an interactive learning environment where participants discussed the social, psychological, and health implications of substance abuse, cult-related activities, and HIV/AIDS. Through engaging presentations and discussions, students gained valuable knowledge on how these societal challenges affect individuals, families, and communities.
During the programme, ESERC emphasized the importance of self-discipline, positive peer influence, and personal responsibility in preventing risky behaviours. Students were encouraged to resist peer pressure, embrace healthy lifestyles, and seek guidance from trusted adults whenever faced with difficult decisions.
The initiative also highlighted the importance of HIV/AIDS awareness, prevention, and the elimination of stigma and discrimination against people living with HIV. Participants were educated on preventive measures, the value of voluntary testing, and the need to foster compassion and inclusion within their schools and communities.
Recognizing that sustainable change requires collective action, ESERC encouraged teachers, parents, community leaders, and relevant stakeholders to continue supporting young people through mentorship, guidance, and values-based education.
This sensitization programme forms part of ESERC’s broader mission to empower vulnerable populations, promote healthy communities, and create safer learning environments where young people can thrive. By investing in education and preventive awareness, ESERC continues to equip the next generation with the knowledge and confidence needed to become responsible citizens and positive agents of change.
