The Economic and Social Empowerment of Rural Communities (ESERC) convened the Quarterly Meeting of Trained Law Enforcement Officers in Ebonyi State on September 18, 2020, as part of the implementation of the European Union–United Nations (EU-UN) Spotlight Initiative Project. The meeting formed part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the capacity of law enforcement agencies in preventing and responding to violence against women and girls, sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV), and other harmful practices.
The quarterly engagement brought together trained officers from relevant law enforcement agencies to review progress, share experiences, discuss challenges encountered in handling SGBV cases, and identify practical strategies for improving survivor-centered responses and access to justice.
Participants reaffirmed their commitment to enforcing laws that protect women and girls from all forms of violence while promoting professionalism, accountability, and respect for the rights and dignity of survivors. The meeting also provided an opportunity to strengthen coordination among law enforcement institutions and enhance collaboration with government agencies, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders working to eliminate gender-based violence in Ebonyi State.
Through interactive discussions and knowledge-sharing sessions, participants examined emerging trends in violence against women and girls and explored approaches to improving case management, reporting mechanisms, referrals, and prosecution of offenders. Emphasis was placed on adopting survivor-centered practices that ensure confidentiality, protection, and timely access to support services.
The meeting forms part of the broader objectives of the EU-UN Spotlight Initiative, a global partnership aimed at eliminating all forms of violence against women and girls through strengthened institutions, effective justice systems, community engagement, and coordinated multi-sectoral action.
As an implementing partner of the Spotlight Initiative in Ebonyi State, ESERC remains committed to supporting law enforcement agencies, government institutions, and community stakeholders in building safer communities where women and girls can live free from violence, discrimination, and harmful practices.
