The Economic and Social Empowerment of Rural Communities (ESERC), in partnership with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and with support from the Centre for Family Health Initiative and Development (CFID), successfully conducted a training programme for in-school peer educators on Antimicrobial Stewardship (AMS).
The training formed part of ongoing efforts to address the growing public health challenge of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) by empowering young people with the knowledge and skills to promote the responsible use of antibiotics and other antimicrobial medicines within their schools and communities.
Participants were introduced to the principles of antimicrobial stewardship, the dangers of antimicrobial resistance, and the importance of using antibiotics responsibly. The sessions highlighted the risks associated with self-medication, misuse and overuse of antibiotics, poor infection prevention practices, and the global impact of drug-resistant infections on public health.
The programme equipped peer educators with practical communication and leadership skills, enabling them to serve as ambassadors for healthy behaviours among their peers. Through interactive discussions, group activities, and health education sessions, participants learned how to promote infection prevention, encourage appropriate healthcare-seeking behaviour, and raise awareness about the importance of following medical prescriptions when using antimicrobial medicines.
Recognizing the important role young people play in influencing positive behavioural change, the training emphasized peer-to-peer education as an effective strategy for expanding health awareness and fostering responsible health practices within schools.
ESERC reaffirmed its commitment to promoting preventive healthcare, health education, and community empowerment through strategic partnerships. By collaborating with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and CFID, the organization continues to support national efforts to combat antimicrobial resistance and strengthen public health systems through education and community engagement.
The successful training underscores the importance of investing in young leaders as catalysts for change. Through sustained awareness, collaboration, and evidence-based health education, ESERC remains dedicated to building healthier communities and contributing to Nigeria’s efforts to reduce antimicrobial resistance and improve health outcomes for future generations.
