The Economic and Social Empowerment of Rural Communities (ESERC) successfully conducted a Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Community Sensitization Programme in Neke Uno Community as part of the implementation of its project, “Breaking the Cycle of Gender-Based Violence: Survivor-Centered Services and Community Engagement in Enugu State.”
The initiative is supported by the French Embassy Fund for Civil Society Organizations (FEF-OSC 2025) and forms part of ESERC’s ongoing commitment to promoting safer, more inclusive communities where women and girls can live free from violence and discrimination.
The sensitization programme brought together community members, traditional leaders, women and youth groups, religious leaders, and other key stakeholders to discuss the causes, consequences, and prevention of gender-based violence. The forum provided a platform for open dialogue on harmful social norms, the importance of gender equality, and the collective responsibility of community members in protecting the rights and dignity of women and girls.
Participants received practical information on the different forms of gender-based violence, the impact of abuse on individuals and families, and the available reporting and referral mechanisms for survivors. Facilitators also emphasized the importance of early reporting, community support, and access to survivor-centred services.
The sensitization encouraged participants to become advocates for positive change within their homes, places of worship, markets, and community gatherings. Discussions focused on promoting respect, challenging harmful cultural practices, supporting survivors without stigma, and creating an environment where violence is neither tolerated nor ignored.
Community leaders reaffirmed their commitment to working alongside ESERC to strengthen local prevention efforts, improve awareness, and ensure that vulnerable persons have access to the support and protection they need.
ESERC emphasized that meaningful and lasting change begins at the grassroots. By empowering communities with knowledge and encouraging active participation, the organization is helping to build sustainable systems that prevent gender-based violence and promote peaceful coexistence.
With the continued support of the French Embassy Fund for Civil Society Organizations (FEF-OSC), ESERC remains committed to expanding community engagement across Enugu State and strengthening partnerships that advance gender equality, protect survivors, and foster communities built on dignity, justice, and respect for human rights.
Together, we can break the cycle of gender-based violence and create a future where every woman and girl is safe, empowered, and able to thrive.
